About Me

My photo
I am a full-time mama with a passion for writing and talking to fascinating people. I live in a one horse town with a Cowboy and my son. Thank Lord for cyberspace! I lived a colourful life in Sydney for a number of years. Working in advertising and journalism for FPC and the Sydney Morning Herald. During my time in Sydney I competed in a Dragon Boat race, choreographed a dragshow, used the Share Accomodation advertisements as a way to meet men and was told by Noiseworks frontrunner Jon Stevens that I was a bitch! Then came the decision to move back to country for 3 months to help out my Father with newspaper business while he was having treatment. Convinced I was a city girl I was caught by surprise when I fell in love with a farmer (and no, he didn't want a wife... still doesn't it seems!) convinced him that we needed to see the world, popped off to Vietnam to teach english in Saigon - before realising that the "food" in Nam didn't agree with me... turned out to be Monte - my son who is now with the Cowboy and I back in country NSW! I am in a wonderful stage of my life where I am focusing on the things that really make me tick. Including writing these chronicles.

Looking at where you live through fresh eyes

Have you ever done this ?

I recommend giving it a go.

Imagine you were a visitor and it was your first time to wherever it is that you live... what do you think would blow them away about the place you call home?

Where would they go to unwind and relax?

Now you have the answer my friend

Go to that place, as though you were wearing a bum bag and knee high socks

So this morning, instead of wallowing around in my PJs going through the motions.

I packed up the Prince, and headed around the corner to our local river beach.

Sometimes I begrudge the OHT so much I miss the stuff that is great.

Actually my Aunt was here for Christmas and she was all " Wow, it is so beautiful down there, if I were you guys I'd be down there all the time swimming, kayaking, reading the papers..."

Such a simple thing to say, but the fresh perspective was absolutely needed.

Now I have seen the OHT through the eyes of a non-local - I am going to enjoy the natural wonders as though I was a tourist.

Its pretty huh?

And the Cowboy and I have shiny new kayaks that we paddle down here....

I was going to sprout a line about the serenity but you saw it coming.

Anyway - starting the day down here with Monte lined us up for a great day.

oh shit have burnt dinner... ahahaha seriously... but hey good start to the day, this can't break me...

  4. Wow it is beautiful in OHT Sharni! I know what you mean about the benefits of pretending to be a tourist. I bought a book about all the walk trails in my town and beyond and I am working my way through them. I take others there after I have had done a reconassiance (?spelling) and they are all like "wow! I never knew this was here!" I bet the tourists see a lot more than the residents in every place. I like your go get to it attitude. Did you get some of those delicious crabsticks after you burnt the dinner? :)

  5. That's exactly what I do when I feel that isolation setting in... How can you be unhappy when surrounded by the best that nature has to offer! Gorgeous spot!

  6. Beautiful indeed... I can see you drifting around in a row boat, reciting poetry to Cowboy.. or maybe just reading your blog to him.

  9. Where do you live? It does look very beautiful. If I were a tourist coming into my town. I would drive down th street and drive right out again. Thers nothing here for tourists or anything you would call beautiful, it's just a place people come to make money.

  10. Hi Danielle - Hay NSW - how about you? Are you in a mining destination per chance?

  11. Passed through Hay for the first time last December. Thought it was a delightful spot. Pretty river, a courthouse so beautiful I'd be proud to be convicted of something in it. And showers in the Visitors Centre !! Yay Hay.
