About Me

My photo
I am a full-time mama with a passion for writing and talking to fascinating people. I live in a one horse town with a Cowboy and my son. Thank Lord for cyberspace! I lived a colourful life in Sydney for a number of years. Working in advertising and journalism for FPC and the Sydney Morning Herald. During my time in Sydney I competed in a Dragon Boat race, choreographed a dragshow, used the Share Accomodation advertisements as a way to meet men and was told by Noiseworks frontrunner Jon Stevens that I was a bitch! Then came the decision to move back to country for 3 months to help out my Father with newspaper business while he was having treatment. Convinced I was a city girl I was caught by surprise when I fell in love with a farmer (and no, he didn't want a wife... still doesn't it seems!) convinced him that we needed to see the world, popped off to Vietnam to teach english in Saigon - before realising that the "food" in Nam didn't agree with me... turned out to be Monte - my son who is now with the Cowboy and I back in country NSW! I am in a wonderful stage of my life where I am focusing on the things that really make me tick. Including writing these chronicles.

The Big Picture

My very inspiring Aunt made a great suggestion to write a flashback piece. Having just visited me in the OHT she thought I should write a story about the picture from Angkor Wat that takes pride of place in our loungeroom....

Heregoes.

Tucked up in our Tuk-Tuk with our driver Sunny, Cowboy and I sat back stunned at the magnificence of Angkor Wat.
To me, this amazing wonder of the world came to represent resilience in the face of adversity, tranquility at all costs and the ability to look at the bigger picture.
This is one of the reasons the 'bigger picture', a rubbing from Angkor Wat, takes pride of place in our lounge room against our crimson red wall.

Cowboy and I travelled to Cambodia shortly after the surprising news of our pregnancy.
We had been in Siem Reap for a couple of days, and I had not been the dream travel companion.
I had entered an unexpected world of day long morning sickness and constant emotional turmoil.
The news of the pregnancy had hit me for six.
I was in foreign territory on every level.
I craved familiarity - yet nothing around me was familiar.
Though I wanted to stay in bed all day and wallow, Cowboy made it clear we were not to do that.
We may be pregnant and in shock - but we were in Cambodia damn it!

So we met our guide Sunny, and took the tuk-tuk to Angkor Wat.
We walked hand in hand along the amazing moat leading up to the temple.
Monks and tourists ahoy, Angkor Wat was certainly the place to be.

As we walked closer and closer to the temple I pondered how Cowboy and I had only been together 9 months and how we were faced with decisions bigger than we had ever faced before.

All the while face to face with the monstrosity of Khmer Architecture adorned with more peaceful Buddhas than you could poke a stick at.

We were viewing this most tranquil and peaceful temple at my most chaotic, lost and confused time.

While we plundered through the magnificent wonder of the world amazed at the sheer detail that went into this 12th Century creation - we began to grasp the significance of where we were.

An enormous ancient temple built completely in honour of one's faith.

Though swarming with tourists, Siem Reap locals came to the temple to pray.
There were many shrines set up.

Many enterprising Cambodians offered us their tour guide services. We couldn't help but notice the sunny disposition of the Cambodian people.

We were in a country that had been through the most horrific adversity and yet seemed to be home to the happiest people I had ever met.

It took us a couple of days to see all the sites of Angkor Wat.

We saw them via foot and via Elephant.

Some of the steeper temples I let Cowboy climb up, while I stayed at ground level having my photograph taken with locals and tourists.
I was quite a hit!
I temporarily considered moving to Cambodia where I would be treated like a movie star purely for the colour of my hair.

So much was going on.

Angkor Wat is a magical place.

Though overrun with tourists (ourselves included) if you find a quiet corner and you are face to face with the intricately designed buddhas - you can't help but feel a sense of all that is bigger than yourself.

The ancient world, the spiritual world, a country filled with people that have faith.

Faith in things they can't see or prove.

It was about that time that I stopped the chatter in my head and decided that it was time too I stopped analysing what was happening within me, my relationship and my life.

It was time to just have faith.

In hindsight, it has paid off.

The two worlds I was experiencing those days at Angkor Wat have come together nicely and the striking reminder in our lounge room never lets me forget the bigger picture.

Looking at where you live through fresh eyes

Have you ever done this ?

I recommend giving it a go.

Imagine you were a visitor and it was your first time to wherever it is that you live... what do you think would blow them away about the place you call home?

Where would they go to unwind and relax?

Now you have the answer my friend

Go to that place, as though you were wearing a bum bag and knee high socks

*********************************************

So this morning, instead of wallowing around in my PJs going through the motions.

I packed up the Prince, and headed around the corner to our local river beach.

Sometimes I begrudge the OHT so much I miss the stuff that is great.

Actually my Aunt was here for Christmas and she was all " Wow, it is so beautiful down there, if I were you guys I'd be down there all the time swimming, kayaking, reading the papers..."

Such a simple thing to say, but the fresh perspective was absolutely needed.

Now I have seen the OHT through the eyes of a non-local - I am going to enjoy the natural wonders as though I was a tourist.

Its pretty huh?

And the Cowboy and I have shiny new kayaks that we paddle down here....

I was going to sprout a line about the serenity but you saw it coming.

Anyway - starting the day down here with Monte lined us up for a great day.

oh shit have burnt dinner... ahahaha seriously... but hey good start to the day, this can't break me...

The Universe wants me to take a longer bloggy break

I can't force it really can I....

I just wrote my heart out. I mean it. The worlds longest most detailed post. I linked it to all sorts of amazing, interesting blogs.
I wrote it as Monte screamed, trying to focus on the words and not the fact that this controlled crying thing is tearing my heart out aswell as my hair.
I wrote about my commitments for 2010 - I wrote a whole lot of positive... I wrote about embracing the year - embracing things - I wrote affirmations about all my goals... and the damn thing deleted itself... it fell into the great abyss.
I am taking this as a sign from the universe to step off blog land until true inspiration hits....
OK I will.....
I could be back tomorrow, I could be back in a few weeks, I could be back in an hour.
But I can't force these things.
Especially when Fritz is standing by next to my delete button. (our German Ghost)
Word up bloggers.
'Til the right moment arrives...

Hoping to find my voice in the washing basket....

i keep starting posts , publishing them and then taking them down.

I wasn't drunk again.

I just wrote one and took it off.

cos I wasn't happy with it.

I'm still all hyped up after having visitors

need to find my voice again

think it may be hidden in the washing pile

I will return when I am feeling it again...

maybe after I fold up some towels.

Word up to 2010

I feel the peer pressure to deliver something either of the 2009 summary variety, or of the hopes for 2010 variety.

I have read some fantastic versions of all of these.

I'm loving Kathy from Lessons from the Monk I married's vow to do 365 lessons.... and I admire her putting it out there to do so!

A bold commitment, but one I am sure this very gal who has just returned from 10 day silent meditation can achieve.

If I could do 10 mins silent meditation, I would do a little twirl!

I like Eileen from Consumption Rebel's 'word of the year' idea as opposed to NY Resolutions.

NY resolutions are things we just never do - so it's high time we threw that word out the window and evolved.

I'm with you Eileen.

My word for the year is embrace.

This year I am going to embrace EVERY opportunity that I create and that comes my way.

I am going to embrace my individuality, embrace what is available to me in the OHT, and literally embrace people - both of the 3D and 2D variety...

So, I feel right about now I should jot down my commitments for 2010 and how I'm going to embrace the year.

Let me list the ways: And yes - you will notice I am writing these in a matter of fact, like I have already achieved them sort of way - that is how the experts say one must do it.

Heregoes:

1) The Cowboy, the Prince and I will make our way to Canada in August (my sis and her family will be living there) - and I will tottle of to New York City for the 2010 Blogher Conference.

Who else is in???

Come on, how FANTASTIC would that be to take an Aussie Blogging Posse over there!! ???

Anyone?

Anyone??

 Beuller?

Oh and if you are in America already. Can I stay at your house??? haha

2) I will launch my website : Sharnanigans!!!

It will be funny, inspirational, helpful, will have a loyal following, it will earn me money, be my passion, feature fascinating people - it will make me twirl, do chair dances - breakdance and wake up pumped.

Yep - working on this website, for some reason.... is my passion.

I feel this is the year I am livin' the dream.

All my 'working life' i have had a little note above my computer that reads "Do what you love and the money will follow"

This is the year it is going to happen my friends. Mark that in your diaries.

3) I will land some online writing gigs while I am waiting for Sharnanigans the website to make me its fortune. People I meet through the blogosphere will actually help me out with that. Thanks in advance guys!

4) I will mama my own way, flick away the 'How to' books and trust my instincts. I will raise Monte with as more natural stimulation and less toys, tv and clutter... I will not fall victim to the 'more, more' consumer mentality - thanks Eileen - and I will raise him to lead an authentic life from the inside out, not the outside in.
Monte will have a fantastic, fun filled year, developing at his own pace, feeling loved, secured and excited about the world.

5) I will be a Beacon of good health!
 Oh yes I will.
This is the year that lollies will be but a distant memory and spinach will light up my life just as a chico, or strawberry and cream once did.
I will be full-time buff.
None of this yo-yo exercising of the last decade. Fit one month, fat the next. I will be permanently tort. Exercise will be part of my day. I walk every morning - without fail, non-negotiable, do weights 3 times a week and kayak the rest of the time. In fact I could very well become a champion Kayaker.
Watch your backs.

6) I will have THE BEST time in Melbourne in Feb with the Cowboy (our first trip away since having Monte, without Monte) it will be romantic, but most of all fun and relaxing!!! And yes, oh dear Lord, we are going to the ACDC concert (kill me now)

7) I commit to taking Monte to a different part of the OHT every day.
Show him something new, whether it be a sheep, a horse, a chicken - different part of the river. I vow to MAKE THE MOST OF WHERE I LIVE instead of wishing I was somewhere more dazzling. I have really come to realise that it doesn't matter where you live, its how happy you are inside that counts.

8) Having said that, this year I would like to really explore potential places for the Cowboy, Prince and I to move to. We want somewhere close to a bigger centre, inspiring, beautiful, nice restaurants, cafe, sporting facilities - a body of water.... any suggestions would be happily received!

9) I'd love to do bloggy meet ups in Australia! Start up something like the BLOGHER conference in NY - over here - what do you think? Guest speakers, cocktails, oh... hmmm.. going to ponder this one more, just popped in to my head while I was minding my own business.

10) Commit myself to nurturing my spiritual side, which reminds me I finished Alice Grist's book - High Heeled Guide to Enlightenment and I ADORE IT, recommend it and will be doing a giveaway for it soon. Let me know if you have any questions you modern gals wondering how to become enlightened - she will be doing a guest post shortly.. she is a cracking writer.

11) I commit to finding more blogs that I love and connecting with more fabulous people on the internet (and 3D ones wouldn't hurt either)

12) I will care less about my hair, and more about things I do have power over... (but does anyone know a great hairdresser in Melbourne..... I will give it one last shot before finally learning the lesson that hair cannot deliver happiness)

13) I commit to writing from the heart, and with my own voice and oh I don't know.... surely that is enough?

2009 was the best year of my life, and this year will be even better...

Its only the beginning, and I've already gone and lost my mind....

So what up? Will you stick with me in 2010 - as the Chronicles evolve into Sharnanigans?

Oh and who is coming to New York?

Guest Post: One way to the OHT

Today I have asked house guest, and brother of Cowboy's - to take the wheel as my Guest Blogger.
As his first visit to the OHT I asked him to write about his impressions of the town, the Prince, and the Cowboy.
It wasn't until he wrote this piece that I realised what a strange room our laundry is, nor just how mystical I appear to be!

One Way to the OHT - An Odyssey -
By the Cowboy's Bro

It started early on Christmas Morning.
I jumped in my car to make my way from my home in the  Black Soiled Plains to the One Horse Town via The Thumping Ground.

(towns renamed to protect the innocent)

Driving 870km through rain, fog and sunshine I arrived on shaky legs just in time to hang out with the Hill Clan of my family in the Thumping Ground.

I spent 3 days doing my best to tire out the niece, nephew and my Dad.

I won!

Through a fierce combination of battling redfin in Mannus Lake and unleashing the fury in battles in the backyard victory was mine.

It was now time for the journey onto the One Horse Town to find out if Sharnia was pulling my leg.

175km of flat nothingness greeted me for the run into the OHT.

I expected to find dust blowing down the main street with the odd tumbleweed rolling along sedately.

I expected to find Tobacco chewing loafers  porch sitting and eyeballing the new arrival.

Surprisingly this was not the case.

After safely negotiating the main street gridlock I made my way through the suburbs of the OHT to find the  location of the mystic Sharnia.

In a small, newly renovated house she resides with a Cowboy and a Prince.

Odd companions for a mystic.

The Prince took instantly to his Uncle Paul, as did Sharnia especially
at the prospect of a live in nanny... ahahahahahah

But, whatever floats your kayak....

The renovations have worked wonders...
but it is the laundry that captured my attention.

It has a tardis like ability to hold an endless supply of everything you happen to be looking for.

"Where is the cheese grater?" I asked the Mystic.

"Oh, its in the laundry" She answered as though the most obvious place in the world.

I later found the laundry housed other miscellaneous items including a notepad, sticky tape and dog food.

(* note from Sharnia - we have just had renovations so all the stuff that wasn't good enough for our newly deluxe kitchen - went to the laundry, I didn't think this was so strange...)

The Cowboy's sheep dogs roam free on the green lawn.

The Prince is fascinated by buttons on the DVD, stove and dishwasher.

On NYE the Prince was sent to his grandparents and we ventured into the bustling nightlife of the OHT.
We were lucky to get in for the crowd.

The local band was playing to an attentive audience of one.

Obviously anticipating a riot the club was serving drinks in plastic cups.

Fortunately said riot did not occur.

The Mystic Sharnia, nor her friend Paula were not impressed by the cardboard vintage white wine claiming

"This is not Peter Lehman Daaarling!"

After clubbing on until the wee hours we fought our way through the hoards to stroll back to the Nirvana that is the Mystic's residence.

The Hill clan from the Thumping Ground arrived the following afternoon to enjoy the Prince performing his new ability to walk.

Once autographs were signed the Prince demonstrated his inability to sleep and proceded to scream the house down.

As the Cowboy and the Mystic were taken up with Princely duties. I took over the BBQ.

The Cowboy proclaimed my effort was "OK" but 'he can do better'

An invalidated claim at this stage.

.Who knows what other wonders exist in the OHT?

The odyssey continues....

Paul left the OHT today enroute to a town with a couple more horses.

It was a pleasure to have him in our mystical residence - he sure charmed the Prince and my neighbours!

Blogging shall resume momentarily

Blogging will return later today. I have had a house full of people and life is about to resume to its original form.
Stay tuned...

Oh and if you saw part of a blog post that was deleted, please fear not, I did a stint of drunk blogging one night and quickly deleted haha...
